After weeks at sea, Marie Barbant, newly insulted by Jean de la Londe, stands up for herself claiming she could work as hard as anyone if she could only get some sleep like Evangeline, who is not sleeping, but actually dead. The discovery is too much for her and she sings about the unknown world they are going to.
